The Sheila McKechnie Awards 2009.

2009 Campaigners Sought
The Sheila McKechnie Foundation (SMK), the UK’s only charity dedicated to supporting campaigners across a wide spectrum of issues, has launched its annual awards programme for campaigners.
The awards are given to individuals who show passion, tenacity and potential to create change for the better, or stop change that will make things worse – locally, nationally or globally.
The SMK is searching throughout communities across the UK for people of all ages. The SMK says: ‘You might not see yourself as a ‘campaigner’, and you might not have been doing it for very long, but if you are demonstrating commitment to a cause, SMK wants to hear from you’.

Tara Flood, Alliance for Inclusive Education, and one of 12 SMK Award Winners from 2008 apprecaited the benefits winning the award can bring: “ The SMK Award affirmed for me that individuals can create change, on their own and working with others. I didn’t think I’d have any hope of winning this award because I thought what we were campaigning on was too controversial. But SMK backs people who have got positive ideas, drive and commitment”.

The Awards equip campaigners with the skills needed to be more effective and bring about change, through one-to-one, mentoring, coaching and shadowing decision makers.

Environment
One of the award categories is the environment. This award will highlight the hundreds of campaigners working to provide sustainable solutions to the environmental problems to be faced locally and globally. The environment award is sponsored by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

Closing date for entries to the Awards is Tuesday 30th June 2009.
